Shaftesbury will enjoy an additional festive market in the run-up to Christmas. The Mitre Inn has announced that they’re hosting their first seasonal celebration on the 8th and 9th of December.
The weekend falls between the two big Chamber of Commerce seasonal events – late night Christmas shopping on Monday 3rd December and the Christmas Market on Sunday 16th December.
Mitre Inn Manager Jana Hackova said her team wanted to keep the festive momentum going. “We wanted the community to come together, to create that Christmas spirit a little earlier and offer something a bit different. People can come to the pub and get stocking fillers for the children and their relatives.”
Attendees will be able to dine, drink and shop outside the pub whilst taking in the stunning views over the valley below and toward Melbury Beacon. “It’s going to be on our decking,” said Jana. “We will clear it out for little stalls with food, some festive drinks and a cheese stall.”
Jana is promising hot food from an outdoor hog roast. “We will still serve food in the pub and maybe something vegan, as well. We’ll have seasonal refreshments outside as well – mulled wine and mulled cider.” The pub still has space for some extra stallholders. Just under a dozen people have confirmed their attendance so far. “Obviously we need to plan space so people can stand and mingle,” said Jana.
Craft items on sale will include handmade Christmas decorations and cards, a local artist who fashions lampshades out of old bottles and Child Okeford artisan, Kim Souter. “I’m really excited about her glass painting decorations,” enthused Jana. “She’s made glass candle holders for our Christmas display, which are absolutely beautiful. The ladies from the knitting shop are having their stall and there’s going to be a woman with tea cosies, too. They are my favourite,” she added.
Jana promises an appearance from Santa over the weekend and she’s talking with a Shaftesbury choir. She hopes they will sing festive favourites at the market.
