Poetry And Paintings Celebrates Shaftesbury’s Places Of ‘Sanctuary’

Hugely talented Shaftesbury artist Rachel Sargent had hoped to visit Crete with her friend, poet Catherine Simmons. But the pandemic put pay to the friends’ planned trip and creative collaboration.

Instead, Rachel spent lockdown walking the landscape around Shaftesbury. Catherine completed a project she began twenty years ago, reflecting the changing seasons at Breach Common. Beautiful paintings and powerful words come together in ‘Sanctuary’, Rachel and Catherine’s exhibition at Shaftesbury Arts Centre Gallery from today until the 5th of October.

Tomorrow (Thursday), Catherine will perform her poem in the setting which inspired it – Breach Common. She will be accompanied by folk musicians Ebb and Flow between 6pm and 6.45pm. Leave St James’ Church, go down Foyle Hill, take the second right and go next right into Cottage Green Paddock.
