French onion seller Jean-Claude Guyade has sadly lost his battle with prostate cancer. He died in January, aged 74.
But his friends will continue visiting Shaftesbury to sell onions sourced from Roscoff. And Geoff White will be outside King Alfred’s Kitchen this Saturday with onions, stories and pictures of his friend.
Jean-Claude taught Geoff how to continue the business. He was quite demanding. “You had to do everything his way because he had been doing it for so long. The strings had to be all the same length, the same number on them and they were hung in the same place at the same venue at the same time. But he wasn’t wrong. He knew how to do it,” says Geoff.
