It’s Official – Shaftesbury’s Town Centre Flowers Are The Best In The South!

Shaftesbury has taken the top prize in the Britain in Bloom regional awards for the South and Southeast, gaining gold in the Town Centre category.

Shaftesbury in Bloom’s James Thrift reveals Shaftesbury’s huge score. James also explains what the volunteers do to maintain the displays and how the flowers and troughs are funded.

We talk with Derek Beer, too. He has been given a special award to recognise his long commitment to Britain in Bloom.

The judge viewed our town centre in July. He was impressed that Shaftesbury appeared litter free. And he was pleased to observe a great deal of community involvement in horticulture and floral displays.

He visited volunteers at the Abbey Gardens, Westminster Memorial Hospital and Rolt Millennium Green. He also chatted with staff and pupils at Abbey Primary School and viewed their gardens and nature area. His judging report reveals that he was impressed by the people he met and by the vision shown in our town’s tree planting plan.
