In the 1970s, there were fears that the art of thatching would be lost. That’s no longer the case. 29-year-old Shaftesbury thatcher Matt Pickford is in demand.
He tells Alfred why he considers his trade to be art. It is easy to understand why, when you hear about Matt’s attention to detail in the finishing touches on the ridgelines which often include sculptures of animals.
He’s been working on the re-thatching of a property on Bell Street where Alfred found Matt at work.
