Hundreds of Shaftesbury residents attended the official opening of Shaftesbury FC’s new artificial pitch last night. Local brewery owner and film director Guy Ritchie cut the ribbon.
Guy told us he was impressed by the new 3G pitch. Listen to our interview with Guy and our report from last night’s events. He now spends more time at his home in Berwick St John than London, and he says he loves this area. Guy’s Gritchie Brewery beer is available in more local pubs now and he wants his company to be considered the main Shaftesbury brewery.
Shaftesbury Town Council has played a key role in facilitating this new playing surface. Cllr Piers Brown said he felt emotional watching the new 3G pitch being used by over 100 young players. We heard a similarly emotional response from SFC vice-chairman Nick Crane. He told Alfred, “I am so proud I could burst.”
Our report also features interviews with Kath Purnell, Dorset FA’s Football Development Officer. “This is amazing. It’s what football is all about,” she said. We also speak with first-team manager Ollie Cherrett, club chairman Steve Coffen and the new Shaftesbury Ladies FC manager James Higgins. James has just been appointed to the role. He applied after he heard about the vacancy when we mentioned it on Alfred.
