2022 is the 400th anniversary of button making in Shaftesbury.

The tradition of Shaftesbury button making is also being celebrated this year. Shaftesbury button making started 400 years ago. Historian Penny-Jane Swift tells Alfred’s Nick Crump how the launch of this major local industry can be traced to one particular year. “There’s some suggestion that Napoleon Bonaparte’s baby’s clothes had Dorset buttons on,” Penny-Jane tells Nick.
