History – The Spiteful Shaftesbury Former MP Who Cut Off The Town’s Water

The lack of running water in our hilltop town has been a consistent theme throughout our history. Jamie Wright is keen to learn more about efforts to pipe water to Shaftesbury in the early 1700s.

Jamie has uncovered documents referring to Shaftesbury MP William Benson. Jamie believes Benson took an inventor’s idea for supplying water to fountains to bring in water from Wincombe.

But bitter Benson cut off the pipelines when Shaftesbury’s voters chose not to re-elect him.
