The annual visit by Moto Guzzi motorbike riders was an important event in Shaftesbury’s calendar during the 1970s and 1980s.
At its peak, up to 1,000 riders rode to our town to camp on land now occupied by the Tesco store. Serena Powys is general secretary of the national group that celebrates the Italian motorcycle maker’s bikes. She shares memories of her Shaftesbury visits with Alfred.
Sadly, the Town Council was not fully appreciative of the group’s economic value. Serena explains the range of reasons why they decided to switch their annual get-together to Fordingbridge. And she tells us why, sadly, it is unlikely that Moto Guzzi will return to Shaftesbury.
