Campaign To Tackle Poor Councillor Conduct Launched In Shaftesbury

Shaftesbury Town Council has launched a campaign to deal with poor behaviour by councillors.

Town and parish councils have limited powers to reign-in councillors who bully staff or fellow councillors. The high turnover of town clerks nationally has been blamed on the absence of effective disciplinary measures.

On Tuesday, Shaftesbury town councillors backed Shaftesbury town clerk Claire Commons’ idea. Claire suggests that larger, county-sized councils could take on a disciplinary function for town and parish councils.

Our town council will now contact our MP and the Secretary of State to lobby for change.
