Councillors Rethink St James Play Park Following ‘Eye Opening’ Report

Town councillors have discussed a report into gender imbalance in play parks. Cllr Tim Cook described the ‘make space for girls’ research as an ‘eye opener’.

It explains that most play areas are designed with boys in mind. Skate parks, like the one at Barton Hill, are generally used by lads 90% of the time.

The report has prompted a rethink of plans for a new St James play area. It’s hoped that a bespoke facility can be created. This park upgrade will coincide with improvements to the Jubilee Steps railings nearby.

Listen to our report to hear how play areas can be designed to appeal more to girls, and how the Town Council intends to consult with the community to ensure its what young people want.
