Friends Of Shaftesbury Pool Share Their Vision With Town Council

The new Oasis Pool friends’ group has told Shaftesbury Town Council that the swimming pool is ‘hugely valued’ and loved.

But they say that ‘without further investment’ it can’t meet the needs of the town’s growing population.

Stuart Edwards, who was vice-chairman of the Neighbourhood Plan Committee, spoke on behalf of the newly formed, thirty-person strong Friends of Shaftesbury Swimming or FOSS.

Stuart Edwards of FOSS addresses Shaftesbury Town Council.

Stuart told Tuesday night’s Recreation, Open Spaces and Environment Committee meeting, that Shaftesbury swimmers have lost access to two year-round places to swim – Port Regis and St Mary’s. FOSS would like the Oasis pool opened outside the summer season.

Cllr Piers Brown cautioned that the pool currently generates £40,000 income and that was break even. He wouldn’t support extending the opening if the ratepayer had to fund the extra swimming period. But Cllr Phil Proctor suggested that people might want to pay more council tax for the enhanced facility.
