Shaftesbury Council Funds Emergency Abbey Repairs And Youth Club COVID-19 Clean

Shaftesbury Town councillors have awarded £4,750 in grant funding.

But one councillor, Karen Tippins, has questioned the town council’s grants. She doesn’t believe the community wants the council to offer so much support to local good causes. Cllr Tippins wants the money spent on ‘local amenities’.

Shaftesbury Abbey will receive £2,500 emergency cash towards a £5,000 project to repair the crypt, which partially collapsed in November.

Shaftesbury Youth Club has introduced an extensive and costly COVID-safe cleaning regime. But Cllr Peter Yeo questioned their £3,000 request. The club will receive half that sum. The council has resolved only to award 50% of project costs.

Home Start North Dorset will also get support, although Cllr Tippins didn’t think they were local enough.
