Social distancing rules mean that some retailers and market operators hiring Shaftesbury Town Hall can accommodate fewer stalls than usual.
There have been calls for reduced hall hire rates while the pandemic continues.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Shaftesbury Town Council revealed that they had lost £15,000 of hall hire income this year. Councillors faced a stark choice. If they reduced fees to support struggling traders, Shaftesbury’s ratepayers share of council tax may increase to meet the shortfall. Or town council services and projects might be axed. The majority of councillors voted to freeze hall hire charges at 2020 prices, but commercial rates will not be lowered further.
