Shaftesbury town councillors believe that the ‘spine road’ linking Wincombe Lane to The Maltings Estate must be built as planned.
Cllr John Lewer described the access road as ‘the vital bit that’s missing’. This northern estate entrance had been proposed in tandem with a ban on private vehicles accessing The Maltings along Mampitts Lane.
Dorset Council wants to go ahead with the bus gate restriction. Cllr Lewer told Tuesday’s Shaftesbury Town Council meeting that Dorset Council had ‘fouled up’ by not ensuring the spine road had been built.
This new link road would cross ‘the Hopkins land’. Its owners are not revealing their plans for their plot, which had led to suggestions that they might be holding out for the best sale price. The meeting discussed options for forcing a sale and heard that there could be a way to make the land cheaper.
