Shaftesbury MP Says You Can’t Please Everyone With Essential Business Rules

Many customers of Coconut and Cotton, Shaftesbury’s plastic-free store, were disappointed when Dorset Council asked owner Lucy Barfoot to close her shop doors for the remainder of the lockdown.

Officers did not consider the Swans Yard shop to be an essential business but Lucy argues that she should remain fully open because she sells personal hygiene and cleaning products.

Several Shaftesbury residents have claimed that the rules are blurry and tend to favour big, national retailers over our High Street independents.

We asked MP Simon Hoare whether the rules are unfair or unclear.
