Listen to Dave Hardiman tell the life story of West Orchard resident Elizabeth Lemon and her colourful life.
Born in 1818, Elizabeth married a farmworker who was imprisoned for a crime that would not make the headlines these days. The couple faced being turfed out of their rented home for celebrating their religion there.
The family faced incredible hardship and some of their children died through malnutrition, so they decided to escape the poverty and emigrate to Australia. Life was initially very tough there as you will hear. But the story ends more happily, and the couple left an incredible legacy – 81 grandchildren!
